This, although seemingly quite a small event, was really fun. As I live in a city where there is an enormous ship-building yard, the company (Mitsui) want to keep good relations with the locals. Therefore, when they have finished building an enormous boat (by enormous I mean some kind of cargo ship), they invite the locals to the launch. They had built this boat for an Australian company so we were given Japanese and Australian flags to wave. After a short ceremony, a lady sent a champagne bottle to be smashed against the side of the ship and loads of banners and confetti came out the back and the ship went into the water really fast. I genuinely thought it would go super slow and be quite boring, but everyone was surprised at its speed. The workers at Mitsui were all dressed like miners and the whole place smelt like welding and dynamite.
